If you want to find out how good you really are, I have a deal for you. Get together a group of four friends you trust, set aside three or four hours to play, put on your best suit, stock up on potions, and challenge Dragonstar Arena. If you can get through it, you'll pick up some great loot, good XP, and you can wear the coveted Dragonstar Arena Conqueror title.
This area basically works like a ten room VR14 ranked dungeon, with each successive round becoming more of a challenge. Between rounds you get a chest to loot and be sure to hit up the shop Imp, Kizna, to repair your gear.
Make sure you check out the scenery in each round. The sights are incredible themselves. The arenas include an icy area where you have to stay close to the fire to keep warm, a marsh with poison clouds, a Daedric ruin reminiscent of Oblivion with human sacrifices, and a graveyard where one wrong dodge roll will send you plummeting into a lonely tomb. The rounds consist of multiple waves of enemies and a boss (or two), so you will have to balance your group carefully and be prepared to fight bad guys with a vast array of different powers. I took the hardest hit I have ever seen during one of these battles - a critical hit for over 100k damage!
In the final round you face off with Hiath the Battlemaster. As the fight opens he is alone but soon fireballs rain down from the sky, setting the very ground itself ablaze (Vampires beware). As you work down his health, he summons pairs of bosses from the previous rounds that you have to defeat at the same time. It's an awesome test of your build, your equipment, and how well you can work as a team.
I had an incredibly satisfying experience with my first outing into the arena. Over the course of several hours we managed to take down each boss, wiping out a few times along the way. I discovered some weaknesses that I'm going to work on as I continue heading towards VR14 myself - notably that as a high Magicka based DPS Sorcerer I'm definitely a glass cannon. I have to give props to my adventuring friends - they were patient as I stumbled and had plenty of soul gems to bring me back, and we kept going to the very end.
Unfortunately there's no wi-fi out here in the doghouse (I missed supper with the wife and kids over this run), but as soon as I make amends, I'll be back at it. I’m off to buy chocolate and flowers. See you guys soon in Tamriel.
